Dedicated to advancing medical science and improving treatment outcomes, North Carolina’s premier hospitals prioritize collaboration, innovation, and patient-centered care. Through these efforts, these institutions set benchmarks in healthcare excellence statewide.

Statements in this release that are not historical facts, including statements regarding anticipated use of Premier’s supply chain and performance services, are forward-looking and are subject to risks and uncertainties.

    1. Catawba Valley Medical Center

As the region’s largest not-for-profit community hospital, CVMC exists to heal and comfort patients, promote a healthier community, and ensure access to healthcare for everyone – regardless of ability to pay. With a full range of medical specialties, Catawba Valley Medical Center provides whole-person care close to home for all ages and stages of life.

Medicare uses several measures to assess hospitals’ performance. These include how often hospitals give recommended care that research shows improves outcomes, how often they treat certain conditions correctly, and how well they manage a patient’s hospital stay. Hospitals are also assessed on how much they charge for services and what patients pay for their care after leaving the hospital.

Hospitals that have met specific quality and safety requirements earn a five-star rating. These hospitals have been rated highly by Medicare and demonstrate leadership in providing safe, effective, efficient, and accessible care.

This ranking is based on overall performance across 57 quality measures, plus a hospital’s survey results and a detailed assessment of how well it meets the needs of its community. See how your local hospital compares.

Employees at Catawba Valley Medical Center make an average salary of $38,076 per year. The company has a high employee retention rate at 4.8 years on average. Compare this to the salaries of similar companies like Diagnostic Imaging Centers, Heart of America Medical Center, and Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center.

    2. Duke Raleigh Hospital

The network includes three highly regarded hospitals -Duke University Hospital, Durham Regional Hospital and Duke Raleigh Hospital – physician practices, home hospice care and various support services at locations across North Carolina.

Originally opened in 1914 as Mary Elizabeth Hospital, the facility moved to its present location in 1978 and is now a 186 bed community hospital with 500 physicians on its medical staff.

The medical staff at the Duke University hospital has accomplished a great deal of groundbreaking research over its history. In the 1950s, surgeons at the hospital developed a procedure known as “systemic hypothermia” that brought body temperature down to reduce the risk of tissue damage during lengthy surgeries.

In the 1990s, Duke geneticists invented a three-minute test that screens newborns for 30 metabolic diseases at one time, dramatically improving the ability to identify conditions before they cause serious problems. The nursing department also achieved a first in the field by developing the clinical nursing specialist degree program.

    3. UNC Rex Hospital

The oldest hospital in Raleigh, the state’s capital city, this top healthcare system demonstrates an unwavering commitment to patient safety. The system features a robust physician network of more than 3,200 employed physicians across 700 affiliated practices. Its focus on quality and value also extends to its community by providing access to a wide range of medical specialties and services.

Originally founded by a bequest from tanner and slave owner John T. Rex, the facility has become a leading healthcare provider and an essential resource for research innovation and medical education. The system is dedicated to delivering superior care and service, while continuing its legacy of excellence in education and patient safety.

In the most recent CMS star rating, Rex was awarded five stars—only 13 hospitals nationwide have earned this distinction. This star rating is based on seven categories that examine hospital performance, including mortality, readmission, efficiency of care and quality of patient experience. It also takes into account whether a hospital tracked and reported data by race and ethnicity.

Premier’s performance and financial results are subject to various risks and uncertainties that could cause actual outcomes and results to differ materially from those expressed or implied in any forward-looking statements, including but not limited to the effects of economic conditions, changes in government regulation, political events, competitive factors, changes in customer demand, and other risks described in the Premier’s filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

    4. Atrium Health

Atrium Health is nationally recognized for its top-ranked pediatric, cancer and heart care, organ transplants, burn treatments and specialized musculoskeletal programs. The system also leads in experiential medical education and groundbreaking research.

The system tries to help its community by donating millions of dollars in charity care and other investments, as well as providing a financial assistance program that provides patients with money toward the cost of hospital procedures. It is a good idea to contact the hospital before scheduling any procedures, though, because out-of-pocket costs for services not covered by insurance can add up quickly.

Like other nonprofit hospitals across the country, Atrium has been expanding rapidly by gobbling up community hospitals, specialty clinics and physician practices. That expansion has been made possible by a series of tax breaks. For example, as a governmental unit, the hospital can avoid paying property taxes, and federal antitrust rules that apply to private corporations don?t apply to the hospital.

Atrium is a major employer in the Charlotte area, with a workforce of more than 60,000 employees across 40 hospitals and more than 900 care locations. In addition to helping its employees live healthier lives, the company also strives to make work a happier place. One of the main ways it does that is by implementing its Joy in Medicine initiative, which gives doctors, nurses and other caregivers an opportunity to share their thoughts about what makes the job satisfying or not.
